Create a silhouette from a photo using Photoshop.

Photoshop CS3 is a photo-editing program manufactured by Adobe. Photoshop can be used for a variety of design and editing applications. If you have a photo with a clear subject and background, you can create a silhouette using Photoshop. For best results, use a photo with a clear subject to ensure the finished silhouette appears clean and professional. When you select a photo with a simple background, you will have an easier time locating the lines of the subject.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a digital photo in Photoshop. Choose a picture with which you can make a clear silhouette, with well-defined lines and shapes and a basic background.

    • 2

Press the "Control" key and the "J" key to create a duplicate background layer. Name the duplicate layer if you prefer.

    • 3

Click on the Magic Wand tool. This tool will automatically select the subject of the picture and create a working outline around the edges of the subject. Click on the tool and on the picture to create an outline.

    • 4

Enlarge the photo using the zoom function until you can clearly see the edges of the subject. Select the Lasso tool. Clean the edges of the subject by clicking and adjusting the outline. Continue until the subject is clearly outlined.

    • 5

Inverse the image to work with the subject instead of the background, by clicking on the "Inverse" button under the Select menu.

    • 6

Copy the image by clicking on "Copy" under the Edit menu. Create a new background and add any color that you prefer. Paste the silhouette into the new background and save the image.

    • 7

Fill the silhouette image with color. Black is a traditional color for silhouettes, but you can experiment with other shades.
