How Do I Learn to Use a Talk Box?

How Do I Learn to Use a Talk Box? thumbnail
The Talk Box can help parents figure out how to encourage language growth in toddlers and other children.

The Talk Box was designed by speech-language pathologists who wanted to help encourage interaction between parents and their young children to develop and bolster language learning. There are two Talk Boxes, one for children between birth and age 5 and one for children between the ages of 5 and 12. A Talk Box is meant for use by children, their parents and other family members, as well as early childhood professionals, teachers, and others who interact frequently with young children. Learning how to use a Talk Box is fairly simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Look through the Talk Box, which has information about speech and language development, usage tips, newsletters and activity sheets. Familiarize yourself with the components included in the Talk Box.

    • 2

Read the newsletters to get tips on how to encourage language development through everyday activities and what to expect.

    • 3

Look at the "Speech Sounds Checklist" for the age of your child and see where they should be developmentally. Remember that there is a wide range of "normal" for all children when it comes to development.

    • 4

Hang up the poster included in the Talk Box in a place you will see it every day to remind you to use the Talk Box skills, tips and suggestions with your child.

    • 5

Find topic cards that explain everyday subjects and how to speak with your child about these topics to encourage their language development. For instance, in the box for children up to age 5, one of the cards is about toys and offers suggestions, tips and games to help your child learn about toys and what they mean in their world.

    • 6

Set aside time every week to perform the activity sheets included with the Talk Box with your child.

    • 7

Use the resources listed in the Talk Box to find speech and early childhood development experts that can help you if questions or concerns arise.
