Decide which windows or interior doors you would like to decorate with sheer curtains. Windows in portions of the home that receive a lot of sunlight are an obvious choice, but this does not have to be your only deciding factor. Measure window or door dimensions to determine which size sheer panels you require. For tall windows, measure from the curtain rod down to just above the floor. For smaller windows, measure from the curtain rod to just below the window sill.

Make a note of the color scheme of your room by looking at your walls, furniture and accessories to help you choose the color for your sheer curtains. Generally there should be no more than three main colors in your room, although varying shades and tones of these same colors may exist. For example, if using a monochromatic scheme, choose sheers that are two or three shades lighter or darker than your wall color. Website Tips' color chooser page has an interactive tool to help you choose an appropriate color based on your room decor.

Consider using several sets of sheers on the same window for color contrast; this also makes the curtain combination less see-through. The Guide4Home website recommends combining white and fuschia sheers; the Sheer Curtain Panels website suggests one panel each of black, gray and light purple sheers. Make sure, however, that colors do not clash with the rest of the room.

Buy patterned sheers if you do not want plain ones. You can also transform plain ones by adding your own designs. Place pictures of flowers, butterflies, leaves or any other shape underneath the panel. Trace shapes onto the sheer using a fabric paint pen or marker. The Drapes'n'Curtains website recommends ironing the back of the fabric to preserve the design. The Creative Jewish Mom website recommends attaching fake flowers that match the room to your plain sheers. Remove the stems from the flowers and stick magnets to their backs with a glue gun. Place magnet backings on the other side of the sheer panel and attach flowers in front.
