1
Ask the guest of honor to choose a birthday theme primary color and accent color. He may want his favorite color as the primary color, but may well decide on another, if he already used his favorite color at a previous year's party.
-
2
Evaluate your party setting to identify the best locations for wall decorations. Look for empty walls or walls with pictures that can easily be removed. Measure each wall space. Buy birthday-themed posters to fit small areas. Purchase birthday-themed banners and backdrops for large wall spaces such as outdoor walls.

3
Buy about 30 balloons in the primary color and 20 balloons in the accent color. Purchase ribbons in party colors to tie around balloons. Rent a helium tank for the day of the party.
-
4
Go to a balloon shop and buy about five to 10 already-filled helium balloons to test out the best locations for balloon decorations, in advance.
For indoor parties, plan on decorating the ceiling with balloons by tying ribbons onto each balloon and letting them float to the ceiling. If the room looks too cluttered with the ceiling balloons, plan on simply hanging balloons along walls or in corners.
If you are holding the party outdoors, plan on creating balloon bouquets by pulling together five to 10 balloons and tying them together with ribbon. Test out this method by making bouquets out of the pre-filled balloons. Hang the bouquets from different locations such as trees or gates. Make a list of all suitable locations where the bouquets should be positioned.
-
5
Determine how many tables you will need and exactly where you will set up each one. Buy tablecloths in the accent color and plates, napkins, serving platters and cups in the primary color.
-
6
Open a package of plates and take one plate to the store when purchasing birthday hats. Purchase birthday hats that fit inside the inner rim of the plate and match well with the plate color.
-
7
Set up a mock table with the tablecloth and all paper goods in place and party hats positioned in the middle of each plate. Take a picture of the table to use as a guide on the day of the party.
-
8
Order a birthday cake with at least three layers and decorative cake toppers. This can be used as the party table centerpiece.
-
9
Assign tasks for the day of the party. Designate adults to hang wall decorations, hang balloons, set the table, and collect the cake from the bakery.
