How to Disable TrueType Fonts

TrueType fonts were developed by Apple Computer Inc. in the 1980s to rival the PostScript font format. Today, modern computers can handle both TrueType and PostScript font files and, unless you regularly use fonts, you probably don't realize whether you are using a TrueType or a PostScript font in your work. You can disable any type of font in both Windows 7 and Macintosh OS X if you want to remove them from font lists without deleting the original file. You should allow approximately 10 minutes for this task.

  1. Disable TrueType Fonts in Windows 7

      Click the Windows icon in the bottom left of your screen.

      Select "Control Panel" from the menu. (Use the small or large icon view setting.)

      Click "Fonts."

      Select the TrueType font you want to disable. You can find out if a font is TrueType by right clicking its icon and selecting "Properties."

      Right click the TrueType font and select "Hide" from the menu. The font icon will turn gray, indicating the font is disabled. Once disabled, the font will not appear in programs such as Microsoft Word.

      Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each TrueType font you want to disable.

      Click the "Spotlight" magnifying glass icon in the top right of your screen.

      Type "Font Book" and click the application from the search results.

      Select "All Fonts" from under the "Collection" heading.

      Select the TrueType font you want to disable. You can select a font and press "Command" + "i" to find information about each font.

      Right click the TrueType font and select "Disable" from the menu. The font will be removed from font lists in all applications.
