How to Begin a Hand Sewn Blanket Stitch
There are many different stitches you can use to sew cloth. The blanket stitch, for example, can be sewn along the edges of your sewing projects to prevent the edges from unraveling, or to make the edges appear more clean and straight. If you are new to sewing, and have never used the blanket stitch before, follow a few simple guidelines to learn where to place your needle as you sew.

1
Place two pieces of fabric together, lining up the edges.
-
2
Hold the doubled fabric so you can identify one side as the front, and one side as the back.
-
-
3
Thread a needle, doubling the thread, and knot the end.
-
4
Insert the needle into the front piece of fabric, pushing the needle through to the back piece of fabric.
-
5
Pull the needle through slowly until the knot is 1/4 inch away from catching on the front piece of fabric.
-
6
Insert the needle in between the doubled thread right before the knot, and pull the thread taut.
-
7
Insert the needle into the front fabric, about 1/4 inch from the first stitch, and pull it through the back fabric again, leaving a loose loop at the end.
-
8
Hook the needle into the loop, and pull the thread taut. This will cause the looped area to form a line across the top edge of the fabric.
-
9
Repeat this process across the entire edge to complete the blanket stitch.
