How to Rename a Font File

Every font on your computer has a corresponding file that contains the design instructions for that set of characters. Each font file has a unique file name that usually matches the name of the font. Sometimes the file name and the font name may not be the same. Font files can be renamed just like any other kind of file on your computer. When you rename a font file, it will change the name displayed for that font in your applications.

Instructions

  1. Windows 7

    • 1

Open the "Fonts" folder located in "C:\Windows\Fonts."

    • 2

Right-click on the font file and select "Rename."

    • 3

Type in the new name for the font, and then press "Enter." Enter your administrator password if you are prompted to.

    Mac OS X

    • 4

Open the font folder containing the font you want to rename. There are four standard fonts folders stored on Mac OS X.

    • 5

Click on the font once, and click on the file name. The text will become editable.

    • 6

Type in the new name for the font, and then press "Enter."

"Step 2 Right-click on the font file and select "Rename." Im using windows 7 and there is no "rename" option when i right click on the font. why is this and how can i fix it? i have also tried FontExpert 10.0 to change my font names however nothing seems to work/change when they are displayed in adobe illustrator etc. The original embedded title always stays the same.
