How to Set Up an FTA Dish
A FTA Dish or free-to-air receiver is a satellite receiver designed to catch non-encrypted satellite signals. Older FTA dishes used to rely on analog satellite transmissions that are out of use in the United States as of 2009. Newer FTA receivers and decoders are MPEG-4/DVB-S2 standard compliant, which is the digital standard for satellite broadcasts. FTA dish set-up is a relatively simple process to accomplish for those who have the patience required.

1
Install the FTA dish. Standard installations are relatively simple to do. It requires connecting the dish to a Digital Satellite Equipment Control (DiSEqC) switch and running coaxial cable from the satellite dish outside to the receiver on the inside. This part of the process may require the use of a professional installer. Make sure the dish is mounted temporarily initially just in case adjustments are needed to elevation and polarization settings during set-up.
