How to Wash Gortex
Goretex is a patented, lightweight, water resistant and breathable fabric developed for use in outdoor activities by W.L. Gore and Associates Limited. Goretex is used in the manufacture of jackets, rain pants and other apparel. Goretex outerwear comes with its outer surface treated with a durable water repellent or DWR. This coating causes water to bead and roll off the surface of the garment. Sweat and body heat may then pass readily from the inside out. The drier fabric surface reduces the body heat lost by evaporation and keeps the fabric lightweight and comfortable. Correct washing is key to maintaining the integrity of Goretex. Care Instructions for Goretex Outerwear
-
1
Machine wash outerwear in warm water using powdered detergent. Avoid liquid detergent and fabric softener.
-
2
Heavily soiled garments may be pre-treated with an aerosol pre-wash product.
-
-
3
Tumble dry the washed outerwear in the dryer set at medium heat.
-
4
Iron your Goretex outerwear using a warm steam setting to maintain the integrity of the durable water repellent.
-
5
If the fabric appears wet on the outside or feels heavier, the original DWR may be depleted. Use a spray-on or wash-in coating that is factory approved for use on Goretex and iron with a warm steam setting.
-
6
Remove any salt accumulation on Goretex outerwear by wiping it off with a damp cloth or immersing the garment in a bathtub containing warm, clear water.

Tips & Warnings
If Goretex is used in tandem with wool or silk in your garment, dry clean only with clear distilled solvent rinse and spray repellent.
Never machine wash a Goretex garment that has a down filling. The oil in the feathers will be stripped and the insulating properties of the down will be impaired. Dry clean these garments using the products used for wool or silk.
