How to Play Xvid on a DVD Rip

How to Play Xvid on a DVD Rip thumbnail
Convert VTS files to AVI to watch in an Xvid player.

If you have a DVD movie on your hard drive and you'd like to watch the movie with an Xvid player, convert the movie to an AVI file with the Xvid codec. Some programs decrypt video from the disc and encode Xvid video at the same time. According to the Xvid Movies website, encoding with Xvid is faster than encoding with MPEG, even though Xvid files are more compressed. Xvid allows whole DVDs to fit on a CD without sacrificing audio or video quality.

Instructions

  1. Free Auto Gordian Knot Software

    • 1

Download and install the Xvid-creating freeware from the AutoGK website (see Resources). Run the software.

    • 2

Click the file folder icon next to "Input File." Search your hard drive for the folder containing the Video TS (VTS) files from your DVD rip. If you have multiple VTS files, double-click the file that ends with the IFO suffix to add that file to the converting software.

    • 3

Click the blue up and down arrow buttons next to "Audio Track" to choose the language you want to hear in your Xvid movie. Click the arrows next to "Subtitle Track" to choose your subtitles, if your file contains any.

    • 4

Click the menu next to "Predefined Size" to choose the size of your converted video file, from "175 MB" to "2 GB." A larger file size will give you better image and audio quality.

    • 5

Click "Add Job" to add your DVD rip to the job queue. Click "Start" to encode the file as an Xvid movie.

    Xilisoft Xvid-Encoding Software

    • 6

Download the Xvid converter from Xilisoft and install the program (see Resources). Double-click the desktop icon to run the software.

    • 7

Click "File" at the top-left corner of the screen and drag the mouse to "Add Files." Find your Video TS folder on your hard drive, and double-click the VTS.IFO file to add it to the converter. Click your file in the main conversion window to highlight the file.

    • 8

Click the drop-down menu under "Target" in the main window. Drag the mouse to "Xvid." Click "Browse" next to "Destination" at the bottom of the screen. Double-click the hard drive folder where you want to save your Xvid movie.

    • 9

Click the "Convert" button (the red circle) in the toolbar at the top of the screen. Click the "Pause" or "Stop" button in the toolbar to pause or cancel your session.

    AVS Digital Video Software

    • 10

Download the video-converting software from AVS 4 You and install the program (see Resources). Click the "Start" menu, "All Programs" and "AVS4YOU" to run the program.

    • 11

Click "Browse" next to "Input File Name" to look for your DVD rip on your hard drive. Double-click the VTS file to load it in the file converter.

    • 12

Click "To AVI" at the top of the window. Click the drop-down list next to "Profile" at the bottom of the window. Drag the mouse to "Xvid." Click "Convert Now" to encode and save your Xvid video.

Tips & Warnings

  • Decrypt your DVD and convert to Xvid in one step with the AVS converter. Simply insert the DVD you want to convert, and choose the VTS files from the disc as your input file.
