Winterizing your Johnson may take less than five minutes.

When it comes to winterizing your OMC outboard, the process is nearly complete before you reach the dock. OMC pioneered specialized systems in its Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors, such as a partially automated winterization procedure. As you approach the end of the boating season and the beginning of the winter lay-up, it's time to winterize your OMC motor as well as your boat, protecting it from the ravages of winter storage.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the "fast idle" lever, located on the forward side of the throttle control housing. Start the motor. It will idle at normal speed. Begin a slow count to 15. When you reach 15, press the fast-idle lever downward, to the normal operating position

    • 2

Begin a slow count to 15. When you reach 15, raise the fast-idle lever once more. The motor will accelerate to a speed between 1,200 and 1,500 RPM.

    • 3

Stand away from the controls. The motor will shut down in about a minute, completely winterized.

Tips & Warnings

  • Johnson is now part of Bombardier Recreational Products, who pledge to have Johnson parts available for an extended time.

  • Watch the tachometer; if the motor moves to 3,000 RPM, shut it down and start the process over.
