How to Make Your Computer Run Faster With Vista

How to Make Your Computer Run Faster With Vista thumbnail
Take steps to increase the speed of Windows Vista.

When a computer is freshly loaded with Microsoft Windows Vista, the performance of the system is generally very fast. However, as time progresses and more software is installed on the system, Vista begins to slow down. Part of the problem is that many of the installed programs are set to run automatically every time the computer boots up. Modifying these programs so they do not start automatically increases the speed of Windows Vista dramatically.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the Windows-logo key and "R" at the same time.

    • 2

Type "msconfig" and press the "Enter" key.

    • 3

Click the "Services" tab. Click the check mark next to "Hide all Microsoft services." Click the "Disable All" button.

    • 4

Click the "Startup" tab. Click the "Disable All" button.

    • 5

Click "OK" and reboot the computer. Vista will operate faster now because all of the background start-up programs have been disabled.

Tips & Warnings

  • Generally, the background services that are being disabled are not necessary. Most of the time these are programs such as updaters and toolbars. However, occasionally some software is needed, such as software that inter-operates with the printer. It is possible to re-enable the disabled software one at a time to achieve the right balance of functionality and speed.
