How to Rename a Video File Extension

Sometimes you receive a video file saved in the wrong format, making it impossible to open. You must change the file type in order to access it. Modifying a file's extension changes its type. Windows does not automatically allow you to modify file extensions, so you must first change the folder settings so that these extensions are both visible and modifiable. It is possible to change these settings to allow extension renaming in Windows 7, Vista, and XP.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your "Documents" folder. Click on "Organize." Click on "Folder and Search Options." (For Windows XP: Open the folder, click on "Tools" and then "Folder Options.")

    • 2

Click on the "View" tab. Scroll down until you see "Hide extensions for known file types." Uncheck the box beside it. Close that window.

    • 3

Right-click on the relevant video file. Click on "Rename." Highlight the old file extension and type in the new one so that it replaces the old one. Hit "Enter."

Tips & Warnings

  • By changing the folder settings you are able to modify all file types, not just videos. Be careful when renaming files. If you accidentally change a critical system file, your computer may become unresponsive. For maximum safety, re-hide file extensions after you have modified the relevant files.
