How to Rename a Video File Extension
Sometimes you receive a video file saved in the wrong format, making it impossible to open. You must change the file type in order to access it. Modifying a file's extension changes its type. Windows does not automatically allow you to modify file extensions, so you must first change the folder settings so that these extensions are both visible and modifiable. It is possible to change these settings to allow extension renaming in Windows 7, Vista, and XP.

Tips & Warnings
By changing the folder settings you are able to modify all file types, not just videos. Be careful when renaming files. If you accidentally change a critical system file, your computer may become unresponsive. For maximum safety, re-hide file extensions after you have modified the relevant files.
