How to Setup a Proxy on Firefox

A proxy server is a computer system or a program used as an intermediary in various computer networks. The main purpose of setting up a proxy is to hide the user's IP address and thus browse the Internet more anonymously in a secure and safe way. In essence, a proxy manages requests from a user by seeking resources and connecting to other servers. Proxy settings can be arranged on a computer by managing settings on a web browser. Firefox offers an option to change proxy settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Firefox web browser and open the "Tools" menu at the top left.

    • 2

Click the "Option" tab inside the Tools window to open a separate settings window.

    • 3

Click "Connection Settings," located at the bottom right corner, to open a pop-up window.

    • 4

Configure the proxy and your Internet settings in the "Connection Settings" window. You can do it manually, by entering the proxy addresses for the different proxy options. If you are a part of a network, you can click at the bottom of the window to choose the automatic option: "Automatic proxy configuration URL." This option offers a possibility of linking to a certain web page that has the settings required. It allows the proxy setting to be loaded directly from the Internet and the network to which you belong.

    • 5

Type your server address into the appropriate field in the "Connection Settings" window. Make sure to enter a valid and correct proxy server address, as well as the configuration port. Contact your Internet service provider or system administrator if you don't know the server address.

    • 6

Click "OK" to apply the new proxy settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are connecting to a network by entering an "Automatic proxy configuration URL," you must have the password.
