How to Fix a CD Reader

You can fix your own CD drive.

No matter what brand and model computer you own, having a working CD reader in the unit can be a big help. A CD drive or burner allows you to install software or just listen to music. When the CD reader stops working, you want to get it back in service as soon as possible, but since a number of things can cause the drive not to work, it is best to use a step-by-step troubleshooting approach.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut the computer down and restart it. Begin pushing the "Eject" button on the CD drive as soon as the memory count appears on the screen.

    • 2

Shine a flashlight on the CD drawer and locate the small bypass hole on the drawer. This hole is typically located near the Eject button, but it can be difficult to see, especially on a dark-colored drive.

    • 3

Unbend a paper clip and insert it into the bypass hole until you hear the CD begin to spin. Push on the paper clip one more time and the CD drawer should pop out.

    • 4

Remove the CD from the drive and replace it with one that you know works in another player. Click the "My Computer" icon on the computer screen and choose "Explore."

    • 5

Navigate to the drive containing the CD. Depending on your computer's configuration and how many drives it contains, this could be the "D," "E" or "F" drive.

    • 6

Run a laser lens cleaning CD through the unit if the disk is not recognized. You might need to run the cleaning program several times to remove the buildup of dirt and debris from the player's laser lens.
