A toilet rebuild kit replaces the internal parts in a toilet tank. If the toilet does not flush properly or runs constantly, you may need to replace some parts. The toilet flapper and lift chain are parts that generally need replacement more often than other components inside the tank. The average homeowner can remove and replace the parts in less than an hour.
Things You'll Need
- Toilet repair kit
Turn the toilet shutoff valve clockwise to turn off the toilet's main water supply. Remove the tank lid. Flush the toilet to remove the water in the tank. Remove any remaining water with a sponge.
Remove the lift chain from the handle trip lever. Slide the flapper up and remove it from the overflow tube.
Clean the drain seat. Sand the brass drain seats with wet/dry sandpaper. Rinse thoroughly.
Slide the new flapper onto the overfill tube and place it on the drain seat. Attach the lift chain to the handle trip lever and flapper. Push the toilet handle down and release it to determine if adjustments are needed. Shorten the chain if the flapper does not open. Lengthen the chain if it does not close.
Turn the toilet shutoff valve counterclockwise to turn on the water supply. Flush the toilet and inspect the flapper. Adjust the length of the chain as needed. Replace the toilet tank lid.
