How to Log On to a Router Through Internet Explorer

A simple wireless router can allow all computers in a home to connect to the Internet.

A router is a basically a splitter for an Ethernet cord. Routers are most commonly used to connect multiple computers to the Internet through the same connection. They also can be used to set up a local network, with or without an Internet connection. Each router comes with some basic software, called firmware, that controls the router's settings. Accessing this software is like accessing a Web page. You need to know the address of your router and the logon credentials.

Instructions

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Type "http://" then the IP address of the router. Linksys and 3Com routers use "168.192.1.1" as the IP address. D-Link and Netgear routers use "168.192.0.1" as the IP address. Microsoft Broadband routers use "168.192.2.1" as the IP address. Check your router's manual if none of these are the address for your router.

3. Press "Enter."

4. Type "admin" in the user name box and "admin" in the password box for 3Com, Linksys and Microsoft Broadband routers. For Netgear routers use "password" as the password and for D-Link, leave the password box blank. Check your router's manual if necessary to find its default logon credentials.

5. Press "Enter" to log on to the router.

Tips & Warnings

• If you have changed the router's address or logon information, you will need to use the modified information instead of the defaults listed above.
