How to Dispose of Computer Monitors in Virginia

How to Dispose of Computer Monitors in Virginia thumbnail
Do not put computer monitors out with the trash. Virginia recommends donating or e-cycling them instead.

With advances in technology being made in electronics every day, Virginia, like so many other states, is having to deal with its landfills quickly filling up with obsolete electronic equipment, such as computer monitors. In its efforts to keep these items and the hazardous materials they may contain out of its landfills, Virginia's Department of Environmental Quality has been working with manufacturers and other entities to encourage e-cycling of products by consumers. If you have a computer monitor you need to get rid of, consider the available e-cycling options rather than simple disposal.

Instructions

Donate your working computer monitor to Goodwill Industries, which will take it for free. If there is not a Goodwill near you, consider donating a monitor that is in good condition to another charitable organization.

Check out Virginia's Computer Recovery and Recycling Act Information list. In 2008, Virginia passed legislation that required every computer manufacturer that had sold more than 500 units a year in Virginia to file a recovery/recycling plan with the state. The list is by manufacturer, so just look up your brand to see what methods your manufacturer is offering for recycling of its products. For instance, Dell lists Staples stores as a place you can take its products to for free recycling.

Drop off your computer monitor at a county- or city-sponsored electronics recycling collection site. The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has a list of the localities that offer these programs, as well as links to get more specific information as to days and times that these collections are held.

Place a Craigslist advertisement and give away or sell your computer monitor. If your monitor is still in good working condition, someone else may be able to use it and will either purchase it or pick it up from you.

    • 5

Choose an e-waste vendor that provides disposal services. Virginia maintains a list of companies it works with to dispose of electronics, such as computer monitors.

    • 6

Take your monitor to Office Depot. For a small fee, Office Depot will take your used monitor for recycling.

    • 7

Take your used monitor to Best Buy. They charge a fee, but will give you a Best Buy gift card in the same amount.

As of September 2010, you can also contact the Department of Environmental Quality at 804-698-4029 if you have any other questions.
