Directions for a Rival Six Quart Ice Cream Maker
Sunbeam's Rival Six Quart Ice Cream Maker is quite easy to use. Before you get started, read the instruction manual thoroughly to get to know all parts of your ice cream maker and become aware of any warnings associated with its use. Wash and towel dry all of the parts except the motor drive to clear them of any packaging dust or debris. Making ice cream in your Rival takes roughly 30 minutes, not including two to three hours of hardening and maturing time. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
-
-
1
Chill the ice cream mixture in the refrigerator overnight. Fill the ice cream mixture 3/4 of the way full with the ice cream mixture. Do not fill the ice cream maker above this point. The ice cream mixture will expand as it freezes.
-
2
Insert the dasher into the ice cream can. When the dasher is inserted correctly, the bottom tip of the dasher will fit into the indentation in the bottom interior of the ice cream can.
-
-
3
Fit the cover on the ice cream can and place it in the bucket. When the ice cream can is inserted correctly, it is centered in the bucket and touching the bottom interior.
-
4
Connect the motor drive to the dasher. Place the hole in the bottom of the motor drive over the stem that protrudes from the dasher. Twist the motor drive counterclockwise until it connects securely to the ice cream can's cover. Then turn the motor drive clockwise until the tabs underneath its "wings" fit securely into the slots in the bucket's lip.
-
5
Plug the ice cream maker in. The motor drive will begin to turn the ice cream can around the dasher. Do not plug in the Rival until the ice cream can is full, and the dasher, cover and motor drive are in place.
-
6
Add an even 2-inch layer of ice in the bottom of the bucket. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of rock salt evenly over the ice layer. Continue alternating 2-inch layers of ice with 1/4 cup of rock salt until the ice cream maker's bucket is full.
-
7
Allow the ice cream maker to operate for 20 to 40 minutes. When the motor stops rotating the ice cream can, unplug the ice cream maker.
-
8
Wipe the ice and salt off of the ice cream can's cover with a wet cloth.
-
9
Grasp the top of the motor drive and pull it up slowly to lift out the dasher. Scrape the ice cream off of the dasher and into the ice cream can with a rubber spatula.
-
10
Pack the ice cream down by pressing on it with your rubber spatula.
-
11
Separate the ice cream can's cover from the dasher and motor drive. Place it on top of the ice cream can. Keep it securely in place with a rubber band.
-
12
Place the ice cream maker's bucket into the sink. Unplug the drain hole in the side of the bucket and allow the salt water to drain out into the sink.
-
13
Place the ice cream can into the bucket so that it is centered in the bucket and touching the bottom interior.
-
14
Re-fill the bucket with alternating layers of ice (2-inch layers) and salt (1/4 cup) until the ice and salt layers cover the top of the ice cream can's cover.
-
15
Cover the ice cream maker's filled bucket with a folded towel. Place the bucket in the freezer for at least two to three hours to allow the ice cream to harden and ripen.

Tips & Warnings
You may also harden and ripen your ice cream in the freezer. After step 12, place the ice cream can in the freezer for three to four hours. Or, transfer the ice cream from the ice cream can to a plastic lidded container (allow 1/2 inch of space between the packed ice cream and the lip of the container) and freeze it for three to four hours.
Clean your ice cream maker after each use.
The ice cream maker's motor should not stop turning the ice cream can until at least 20 minutes have gone by. If it does, check the bottom of the bucket to see if any ice has become wedged between the ice cream can and the side of the bucket.
