How to Back Up Garmin Nuvi Favorites

Garmin's nüvi series of global positioning systems (GPS) is popular for its intuitive interface and wide range of features. One feature of the nüvi is the ability to save and access your commonly searched addresses as your “Favorites” list. However, a hard reset or data corruption may wipe out user data and settings, including your Favorites. Backing up your Favorites, maps and configurations regularly is a prudent move, although undocumented by the nüvi owner's manual.

Things You'll Need

  • Mini USB cable for nüvi
  • Computer with Internet connection

Instructions

    • 1

Attach your nüvi to your computer via the USB cable. It should power on automatically, and after about 30 seconds your computer should detect its presence.

    • 2

Find the nüvi drive on your computer. Under Windows, open up “My Computer” and the nüvi should be visible as a new drive named “Garmin.” For Mac OS X, open the Finder application and choose Go>Computer, then find a device named “GARMIN.”

    • 3

Double click on the device to open it. Open the GPX folder. Your Favorites are saved in a file called “current.gpx”.

    • 4

Copy current.gpx to your computer's hard drive to back it up. Rename it to something else, like “favorites.gpx”.

    • 5

Eject the Garmin drive before unplugging it from your computer, by right-clicking and choosing “Eject” (Windows), or by clicking on the Eject symbol next to the GARMIN device (Mac).

    • 6

When you wish to restore your Favorites to your nüvi, drag favorites.gpx (or whatever you named the copy you made of current.gpx) back to the Garmin/GPX folder on your nüvi.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can transfer your Favorites from one nüvi to another using this technique.

  • It is unnecessary to rename your backup copy to "current.gpx".

  • Do not detach your nüvi from your computer during the copying process, or before you have ejected the device through Windows or OS X. Unplugging prematurely can cause corruption of your nüvi software or data.
