How to Unlock a Protected PDF File

Portable Document Format (PDF) files can, at times, be sensitive in nature, especially in a work environment. When this is the case, the creator can secure it with a password or passwords. To unlock and view the PDF or to alter the PDF, you will need the password or passwords from the creator. Keep in mind that using hacking software to break into a PDF may be against your employer's policies and may also be considered illegal.

      Find the PDF on your system you want to unlock.

      Double-click on the file. A password dialogue box will appear.

      Type the password or passwords in the appropriate fields. You may be prompted to enter a "user" password to view the document. Click the "Open" button.

      Type the "permissions" or "master" password when you are prompted to do so when you attempt to change the PDF. Click the "OK" button.
