Dense, full of fruits and nuts and the subject of holiday jokes, fruit cakes are noted for their long lasting abilities. Brandy and other spirits add flavor to fruit cakes, but these liquors also age and preserve a fruit cake for long term storage. Aging the fruit cake in a cool environment soaked in liquor for up to four months contributes to the taste and texture as the cakes do not ripen after freezing, according to What's Cooking America.   • Kitchen towel
  • Brandy
  • Powdered sugar
  • Resealable tin container
  • Plastic wrap (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

      Soak a clean kitchen towel to saturation with brandy.

    • 2

      Wrap the towel around a baked and cooled fruit cake.

    • 3

      Fill a resealable tin container with powdered sugar.

    • 4

      Bury the towel covered fruit cake in the powdered sugar.

    • 5

      Seal the fruit cake in the tin and store the tin in a cool, dry place for at least one month.

Tips & Warnings

  • Even after eating a portion, the rest of the fruit cake can be buried in the powdered sugar for long term storage. Rewrap the cake with a brandy soaked towel before returning it to the tin or if the original towel dried during storage. Fruit cakes can also be frozen. Replace the towel with plastic wrap.

  • Anyone with sensitivities to alcohol should avoid eating this cake.
