How to Connect a Cable Modem to an Adsl Router

How to Connect a Cable Modem to an Adsl Router thumbnail
An "ADSL router" can accept data from other types of broadband modems.

A cable modem is a broadband Internet device that translates data from the cable network into data that computer networks can understand. A cable Internet modem (much like its DSL Internet and satellite Internet counterparts) may be used with a wireless router. Many wireless routers were sold as "DSL routers" in the past; however, since wireless routers must all connect to an Ethernet port on a broadband modem, a so-called "DSL router" may be used for other types of broadband Internet service as well.

  • Cable Internet modem with working Internet service
  • Wireless router (sometimes called a "DSL router" or "ADSL router")
  • Computer with wired Ethernet adapter

Turn on the computer and open a web browser window. Type a common web address (such as yahoo.com or msn.com) into the web browser's search bar and press "Enter." The website should appear within 60 seconds; if it does not, check the Ethernet cables to ensure that they are plugged in snugly.
