The Microsoft Xbox’s operating system can be modified through software so that it will play games created by Xbox enthusiasts. This can cause officially licensed games to not work properly. Remove, or “unmod,” the modification made to the operating system so that it will again function as Microsoft intended. The softmod installer/uninstaller program that modified the Xbox will be used to remove the modification--the program remains on the Xbox after the modification is done. The Xbox will not have to be disassembled, and the warranty that came with the game console will again be in effect.

Turn on the Xbox. Go to the “Settings” icon. Select “Utilities” from beneath “Settings.”

Select the softmod installer/uninstaller program from the list presented: for example, the “unleashX” softmod installer/uninstaller program. Press the “X” button on the controller.

Click the “Run” button on the program’s main screen once it appears. Click the “Options” button to go to a new screen.

Select “Restore MS Backup” from the list of choices presented at the left of a new screen. Wait until the scrolling lines at the bottom of the screen cease to move.

Select “Uninstall Softmod” from the list of choices presented at the left of the screen. Select “OK” in the “UNINSTALL” pop-up window. Select “Yes” in the new pop-up window that appears.

Wait as a number of progress bars appear, fill in from left to right and then disappear--this can take up to an hour, depending on how much free space there is on the Xbox’s hard drive.

Select “Yes” in the new pop-up window that appears. Wait as a number of progress bars appear, fill in from left to right and then disappear--this can take up to 10 minutes, depending upon how much free space there is on the Xbox’s hard drive.

Click the “Restart” button on the new pop-up window that appears to reboot the Xbox into an unmoded state.

Warnings

Not having made a backup of the Xbox operating files before modifying it will require installing the files to the hard drive first.
