How to Add a Google Gadget

You can add Google Gadgets on your computer's desktop, or enhance your website to make it more interactive. Your website visitors can utilize the gadgets for their own personal use, such as calendars, translation tools, news feeds or games. However, if you want to add gadgets on your desktop, you will need to install the Google Desktop application on your computer. Then, add your favorite gadget plug-ins on your desktop.

      Download and install Google Desktop on your desktop. Open your Web browser and type the Web address (see "Resources") in the search box. After the Web page loads, click on the "Install Google Desktop" button. You can use the application if you have Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 running on your computer.

      Open the installer file on your desktop and press the "Run" button. Select the "Desktop" option that you want to install. Then, deselect the "Enhanced Search" option if you do not want to include your email, web history or other information for your search results. Then, deselect the "Sidebar with Gadgets" and "Default Google search and homepage" if you don't want to enable these options.

      Select the "Usage statistics and crash reports" option if you want Google Desktop to automatically send crash reports and usage stats information to Google.

      Press the "Done" button. It may take a few minutes for the application to finish the installation process.

      Locate the "Google Desktop" icon on the taskbar and click on it to open the application. Open your Web browser and type the Google Desktop Web address (see "Resources") in the search box.

      Choose a Google Desktop Gadget from the directory. Click on the hyperlink "Download gadget" and save the gadget plug-in on your desktop.

      Open your Web browser and go to the Google Gadgets page (see "Resources"). Choose a Google Gadget from the directory list.

      Press the "Get the Code" button to get the HTML code for your website. Click on the hyperlink, "More about this gadget" to learn more about the Google Gadget.

      Click the "Add to your webpage" button. Adjust the Google Gadget size to your preferences. Use the "Display Settings" to change the title, width, height or border of the gadget. Press the "Preview Changes" button when you're done.

      Change "Google Gadget Language" settings. Press the dropdown menu arrow and choose a language that you want to use.

      Right click on your mouse and choose "Select All" to highlight the HTML code. Hold down the "CTRL" key on your keyboard and strike the letter "C" to copy the code. Select an area on your Web page where you want the gadget to appear. Hold down the "CTRL" key again, and strike the letter "V" to paste the HTML code on your Web page.
