How to Restart the Print Spool on Windows Vista

In Windows Vista, the Print Spooler is a service that schedules and orders print jobs. Necessary for sending documents from your computer to your printer, this service can sometimes stop functioning properly if it is loaded with too many jobs or if too many commands, such as print job cancellations, are given too quickly. If this is the case, you will need to restart the Print Spooler to reset its job list. This can be done in the Windows Vista Services application.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Windows Vista "Services" utility by going to the "Start" menu, typing "services.msc" into the "Start Search" box, and then hitting "Enter."

    • 2

Sort the list by name (if it isn't already), and then scroll down to "Print Spooler" and double click on it.

    • 3

In the "General" tab, click "Stop" in the "Service Status" section. The "Service Status" will change from "Started" to "Stopped."

    • 4

Restart the service by clicking "Start." The "Service Status" will now change back to "Started" and the Print Spooler will be restarted.
