How to Wire 5.1 Speakers

How to Wire 5.1 Speakers thumbnail
A 5.1 speaker system consists of six separate speakers.

A 5.1 speaker system is not a single type of speaker, but rather a set of six speakers. Each set of six speakers in a 5.1 speaker system consists of a center channel speaker, two front speakers and two surround speakers. These speakers are connected with speaker wire to a single power source, either a surround-sound amplifier or a surround-sound receiver. The sixth speaker in the 5.1 speaker system is a powered subwoofer for low-frequency sound and effects. This is connected to the amplifier via a subwoofer cable.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a speaker wire to the speaker terminals of each of the speakers, excluding the subwoofer. Push in the tab on the red terminal on the back of the speaker and insert the bare end of the speaker wire lead that's marked with a series of "+" markings. Push in the black terminal's tab and insert the other lead into the terminal. Release the tabs to clamp the wires in place.

Match the other ends of the speaker wires with the outputs of the home theater receiver. The outputs of the receiver will be a series of pairs of speaker wire terminals. Each pair will have a red terminal and a black terminal, and the pairs will be marked with the speaker location; e.g., "left front." Connect the ends of the wires in the same way you connected the other ends to the speakers.
