How to Restore Gum Health

Healthy gums can help you maintain a healthy smile.

Overall health and wellness is a priority for most of us. Lack of attention to gums sometimes results in gum disease, which is not uncommon over the age of 13. Gum disease is a serious condition that can lead to tooth decay and sometimes tooth loss. It can also be a very painful condition. If your gums aren't in great shape, steps can be taken to help restore your gum health and reduce your risk of gum disease.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush and floss twice a day, and after every meal to help restore gum health. Use a natural toothpaste that won't irritate your gums.

    • 2

Massage your gums daily using a tonic oil that contains oils of eucalyptus, wintergreen and peppermint. Put the oil on a clean finger and use tight, circular motions to massage your gums.

    • 3

Perform a blood-flow exercise twice a day to help restore your gum health. This exercise consists of biting down gently until your teeth meet about 30 times to encourage blood flow.

    • 4

Gargle with a natural mouthwash after brushing. Choose a mouthwash that will kill bacteria but is made with natural ingredients, rather than chemicals.

    • 5

Change your diet. To restore your gum health, eat organic foods and a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Incorporate flaxseed into your diet for the omega-3 fatty acids; green tea to help cleanse your oral cavity; and Vitamin C and Coenzyme Q10 supplements. Avoid sugar and acidic foods and stop smoking as soon as possible.
