How to Make Your Own MP4 Ringtones
When you get a new phone one of the first things you might want to do is change your ringtone to fit your personality. One method is to adapt your own music files into a tone suitable for you. Several programs will allow you to make this conversion for free. After adapting your own songs to ringtones, your friends and family will be able to experience your personality whenever someone gives you a call.

Download and install a MP4 ringtone program like Wavepad, MP4 Converter or the Cell Sea Ring Tone Converter. These instructions are for the Wavepad program, though all of the conversion programs are similar in their procedures.

Open the program and click "Open File" to select your music file. Play your music one time through. Determine where you would like your ring tone to begin. Left click and hold your mouse from where you would like to start in the file over to where you would like it to stop. Keep in mind that many phones cut their ring tones off at 20 seconds.

Click "Edit" and then "Trim" to cut your song down to those 20 seconds. Click "Effects" and "Fade In" to create a several second fade-in. Repeat the same effect at the end of the ring by clicking "Effects" and "Fade Out."

Click "File" and "Save File As." Select "MP4 -- MPEG4 Audio (*.m4a)" as your output file type. Click "OK" to save your ringtone. Connect your phone to your computer to move the ringtone over or send it to your phone in an e-mail.

Move your MP4 ringtone to the ringtone folder of your phone. Select the file as your new ringtone.
