Blu-ray discs provide high-definition audio and video performance as well an numerous special features, many of which are web-enabled. Playing Blu-ray discs requires the use of a Blu-ray drive. Some laptops come with internal Blu-ray players and already have the capacity to play Blu-ray discs. Other laptops might lack an internal Blu-ray player but are still able to play Blu-ray discs when they are connected to an external Blu-ray disc drive through the USB port.

      Insert your Blu-ray disc drive installation software into your laptop's CD or DVD drive. Generally, the installation software will run automatically and an installation window will appear on your screen. If the software does not run automatically, open Windows Explorer and navigate to your CD or DVD drive. Locate the shortcut for the installation software from this window, typically called "Install" or "Setup."

      Follow the prompts and instructions of the Blu-ray disc drive installation software. Select a location for the software shortcut and an installation location for the software itself when prompted. Connect the external Blu-ray disc drive to the laptop via the USB cable when directed to by the installation software.

      Run the software you installed in step 2 by clicking on the shortcut to the software. Insert a Blu-ray disc into the external blu ray disc drive. The disc should automatically start to play at this point, although it can take up to 1 minute for a Blu-ray disc to be recognized by the disc drive. If the disc does not play, consult the "Troubleshooting" section of your Blu-ray drive owner's manual.
