How to Recycle Photocopier Toner
No matter what brand and model of copier you own, the unit uses toner to create its finished copies. When the toner runs low and the quality of the copies begins to deteriorate, you need to install a new toner cartridge. When you do install that new cartridge, however, you cannot simply throw the old toner away. The chemicals used to manufacture toner can be harmful to the environment, so recycling the old copier toner is the environmentally responsible thing to do.

1
Check the inside of the box containing the new copier toner. Many toner manufacturers already include a prepaid return label to make recycling the old toner easier.
-
2
Log on to the copier manufacturer's website and search for the word "recycling" or "recycle." Many copier manufacturers have established their own recycling programs to take in toner and other consumables for recycling.

3
Complete the form on the manufacturer's website and print the prepaid shipping label. Place the used photocopier toner in the box, tape it securely and affix the shipping label. Contact the shipping carrier--e.g., UPS, FedEx or USPS--to arrange for pickup.
-
4
Call your local office supply store and ask if they accept toner for recycling. Many office supply chains, including Staples, collect toner cartridges for their recycling programs. Gather your toner cartridges and take them to the store.
-
5
Contact your local library and ask if they have a toner recycling program in place. Many libraries and community organizations accept toner and use it as a fundraiser.
