Many people look forward to learning to drive throughout their childhood. Getting your learner's permit is an exciting step on the road to becoming a licensed driver. Many states require student drivers to take a permit test before they are granted a driving permit. 1
Research the test you'll be taking before you start studying. Learn more about the permit test for your state. Some states do not even require a permit test. Those that do will include information about the test and the type of knowledge you will be tested on. The Department of Motor Vehicle's website showcases a list that includes the DMV and permit information for every state. By clicking on your state, you can learn more about the test you will be taking, so that you can focus on what you need to know.

Your state's driver's manual contains lots of information that will be included on your permit test. Study from your state's driver's manual. You can obtain a copy online or at an area DMV office. These manuals contain important information about traffic laws, driving techniques, signs, illegal driving behaviors and defensive driving. While reading such information laden material can be challenging, it can be much more manageable when it's broken down into smaller chunks. Read for 30 minutes, then take a break. You'll be able to focus better and retain more information.

You can learn a lot from watching another person drive. Get in a car with a licensed adult driver, of course. As she drives, observe the driver's techniques, such as signaling, turning, passing cars and parking. When you pass a sign, see if you know what it means. Keep an eye out for the challenges of driving, such as poor conditions and other drivers. While you don't want to be a distraction, asking some questions about driving and technique can also be helpful. Hopefully, watching an adult drive will bring to life the facts you've been studying in the manual.

Make flash cards. Using the driver's manual as a reference, make flash cards of signs and other facts. Flash cards make it fun and easy to test yourself. Or better yet, grab a friend who also needs to study and take turns testing each other.

5
Taking a practice exam lets you see the types of questions you'll find on the real permit test. Practice taking the test with a practice exam. Many state DMV offices feature a practice test on their website. Find your state's practice exam. See how you do. Determine what types of questions you need to study more and what areas you are the strongest in.
