How to Fix an XP Key

Windows XP mandates entry of a 25-character key prior to full installation, forcing you to prove that you have a valid license to use the product. Your key will later be tested as you download updates to see whether it is legitimate or pirated, possibly preventing you from downloading certain service packs. Resolve this issue by changing your invalid key to a legitimate one through the registry.

Instructions

    • 1

      Click "Start" and "Run."

      Type "regedit" and press "Enter."

Open the following folder: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents."

    • 4

Right-click "ODBETimer." Choose "Modify." Change any character and press "Enter."

    • 5

Click "Start" and "Run." Type "C:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a" and press "Enter" to input a new key.
