How to Save a YouTube Video on a Flash Drive

YouTube videos are in a special format that can not be downloaded using programs on a computer. Save a YouTube video through a video streaming conversion website that will convert the video into a compatible format for your computer and then download it to a storage drive, for example, a Flash drive. There are a number of video streaming conversion websites to use, most of them free with some available to try out for free. All of them work in a similar fashion, if with minor differences. No expertise with video file formats is needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the USB connector of the Flash drive into a USB port on the computer. Go to YouTube. Find a video that you would like to download. Click on the video to start it playing. Click on the address bar at the top of the web browser’s window. Copy the address of the video by pressing “Cntrl+c” or “Command+c” depending upon whether you are using a PC or a Mac.

    • 2

Go to a video streaming conversion website, for example, the free Media-Convert or the free Vizy website (see the link in Resources). Click inside of the text field beneath the “Enter link” or ‘URL here” or “Enter “URL” tab. Paste the address of the video by pressing “Cntrl+v” or “Command+v” depending upon whether you are using a PC or a Mac.

Click the “Next” button if one is present to go to a new web page—otherwise select a compatible format to change the video into from the “Format” or “File output” or “Save as” drop-down menu on the web page—for example, “WMV” for a PC or “MP4” for a Mac.

Select the icon of the Flash drive from the list of choices presented in the left column of the window that appears. Rename the video that is going to be downloaded in the “Name” column on the window or leave it with the default name that is already there.

    • 7
