A well-written cover letter can be your first step toward employment.

Whether you're changing careers, or searching for your first job, writing a cover letter is an important step to employment. A cover letter accompanies your resume and other application documents, and serves as your introduction to a potential employer. The letter should highlight your most impressive achievements, and demonstrate to the employer that your skills make you the ideal candidate for the job.

Instructions

    • 1

Start a new blank document. Center the cursor on the first line and create a single-spaced header with your name, street address, city, state, zip code, business phone number and professional email address. Set the cursor to the left margin and type the current date, double-spaced, beneath this header.

    • 2

Double space and keep the cursor at the left margin. Type the recipient's name, job title, company name and company address, single spaced. Double space again, and type a formal salutation that greets the recipient using the correct prefix or honorific, such as "Dear Dr. Brown."

    • 3

Write a short introductory paragraph, explaining who you are and which job you are applying for. Mention how you learned of the employment opportunity, and include the names of any personal references, if applicable.

    • 4

Write the body of the cover letter. Focus on the skills that best qualify you for the job, and back up your claims with previous accomplishments. For example, if the position requires "strong customer service skills," mention that you are experienced in providing a high level of customer service, as evidenced by your 98 percent customer satisfaction rating at your former job.

    • 5

Write the conclusion of the cover letter, and indicate you are interested in speaking with the employer about this opportunity. Thank him for his time and consideration, and use a formal closing, such as "Sincerely." Type your name, then sign just above your printed name in black ink.

Tips & Warnings

  • The cover letter should be single-spaced, but include a space in between paragraphs.
