How to Make a Gothic Lolita Dress

First worn by Japanese teenagers in the 90s, Lolita is a fashion inspired by Victorian children's clothing with an importance placed on a modest, youthful appearance. Gothic Lolita is one of many style variations within the Lolita look in which some elements of Gothic fashion are added to the Lolita silhouette. The color scheme is usually limited to black and/or white. Interest in the fashion has spread to Europe and North America, inspiring many to design and create their own Gothic Lolita dresses.

Purchase a black knee-length dress with a full skirt and a long or capped sleeved blouse that can be modified with Gothic Lolita fashion elements. Use inspiration from Gothic Lolita websites or magazines when designing your dress.

      • 2

Add black or white lace trim and/or ruffle layers to the skirt portion of the dress. Customize the skirt with pleats, pin tucks and/or a scalloped edge. A petticoat or crinoline may also be used to add volume to the skirt and create a traditional Gothic Lolita silhouette.

Attach lace trim in black or white to the cuffs of the sleeves and the collar of the blouse. A corset may be added to the back of the dress if desired.

Sew on extra details such as bows and ribbons to the bodice of the Gothic Lolita dress. Attach bows as button covers, on cuffs or along the hem of the dress. Ribbons can be added around the waist and tied in the back.

Add the finishing details to your outfit. Include co-ordinating Gothic inspired jewellery, high heeled Mary Jane-styled shoes or boots, fishnet stocking, black/white tights or over the knee socks. Alice in Wonderland-style accessories are also often added to the Gothic Lolita fashion in the form of hats or bonnets, parasols, lace gloves, or hair accessories with ruffles, bows, lace and/or ribbons. Other accessories include hatboxes, pocket books and Gothic handbags shaped like coffins or crucifixes. Teddy bears and other stuffed animals made out of black leather or PVC often are carried.
