How to Create Medals
Medals are often awarded to winners of athletic competitions or those who display excellence in their field. While casting medals might be beyond your ability, you can still create medals out of materials around your home. These homemade medals are more affordable than the cost of hiring a professional company.

1
Paint the small discs of paper mache with the gray gasso. Let them dry. Punch out a star from the cardstock and glue it to the medal on one or both sides. When the glue dries, spray paint both sides of the medal so that the paint has a uniform look. You could use multiple stars to signify gold, silver and bronze---or you can use various colors of paint.

Measure out the ribbon. The ribbon should easily fit around a recipient's neck and allow the medal to hang down to the middle of the chest, or slightly below. Cut the ribbon once it's measured. A general size is roughly 18 inches to 24 inches of ribbon.

Glue the two free ends of the ribbon to the medal. If the medal is one-sided then glue the ends to the back. If the medal is two-sided, glue the ribbon to the top or sides of the medal.

Tips & Warnings
Get creative with the medal design. If you have something like a pirate field day, consider using a skull instead. Or if you'd rather not make the medal from scratch, you could use a bottle cap or other type of pin that can easily be attached to the ribbon.
