How to View Full Headers on AOL

The header of an email contains important information about the sender, receiver and the date and time the message was sent. The header also includes details about the travel route for that particular email, along with the originating IP (Internet Protocol) address. Users with an active AOL email address can view the full header of emails by following a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the AOL website (see Resources for the link) and sign in to your email account with the appropriate username or email address and password.

    • 2

Select an email from one of the following folders: New Mail, Old Mail, Spam or Recently Deleted. Open the email for which you want to view the full header.

    • 3

Click on the "Details" link in the email. The Details link is at the top of the email next to the words "Sent from the Internet." After clicking "Details," the full header will appear.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you receive an email from another AOL member, that message will not contain a header because the email was not routed outside the AOL service.
