How do I Get a Driving Record for Free in Colorado?

A driving record will provide information about an individual's driving history, driving violations and any accidents for the preceding seven years. In Colorado common driving violations, such as speeding tickets, will be removed after a set period of time. It is recommended that all drivers check their driving record to ensure that these violations were removed at the proper time. An inaccurate driving record can increase car insurance premiums dramatically. Free records are only available for drivers that request their own records. Requests for third party records require a fee.

Instructions

  1. Certified Copy

    • 1

Write down or type on a computer a letter requesting a certified copy of the driver's record. Information that must be included in the letter is the driver's full name, date of birth and legible, original signature. To speed up the process also include the driver's license number if this is available.

    • 2

Copy a photo ID that contains the driver's signature. Photocopy both the front and back of the ID if the photo is on the front and the signature on the back. Normally an old license or passport will be fine.

    • 3

Place the letter and ID photocopy in an envelope and mail it to the Division of Motor Vehicles, 1881 Pierce St., Lakewood, CO 80214.

    Non-Certified Copy

    • 4

Find the nearest local Driver's License Office. To obtain a non-certified copy the office must offer full services. The location of the nearest office can be found at the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles website.

    • 5

Bring a photo ID with you to the office and fill out the application form provided upon arrival. This form can also be downloaded online and filled out prior to arriving at the office.

    • 6

Hand in the application and proof of identity and a non-certified copy will be handed to you. This is the best option if you need a non-certified copy quickly. Otherwise all other request will be processed through the mail.

Tips & Warnings

  • It will take the DMV seven to 10 days to process the driving record request by mail. Otherwise a non-certified copy is the best way to get the driving record fast.
