How to Recycle Air Conditioners

How to Recycle Air Conditioners thumbnail
Recycle an air conditioner to avoid spilling potentially harmful refrigerant.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air conditioners contain the potentially dangerous substance hydrochlorofluorocarbon, or HCFC. HCFC is an ozone-depleting substance that, if not disposed of properly, can damage the Earth's delicate ozone layer. Before the metal components of an air conditioner can be recycled, the cooling element must be disposed of properly to protect the Earth from a potential environmental hazard. Instructions

    • 1

Carefully unplug and remove the unit from the window. Place the unit on top of a towel to ensure that any liquids inside do not spill on the floor.

    • 2

Contact a local utility service to inquire if there is a bounty program in your city or county. A bounty program allows the air conditioner's owner to sell the unit for a small price. The unit is then refurbished and resold.

    • 3

Contact your local municipal department of public works, if there is no bounty program in your area or you do not wish to participate in this service. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the municipality will inform you of disposal options in your area. For instance, the bulk item may be picked up curbside for no fee or you may be required to haul the unit to a designated area.

    • 4

Contact an appliance store. The store may be willing to pick up the unit and dispose of its contents for a small fee. You may also be able to take the unit to the store where it will recycle it for free or for a small cost.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid attempting to remove the refrigerant yourself. It could result in the spilling of the HCFC or serious injury.
