How to Network Two Wireless Computers

How to Network Two Wireless Computers thumbnail
Most laptops have wireless adapters installed.

You don't need a wireless router to connect two computers over a wireless network. Windows 7 has the ability to create "ad hoc" networks between computers with wireless adapters. This process used to be quite complicated, but the Windows 7 tool makes creating and joining an ad hoc network quite simple. Once you've created the network, you can share files easily between the computers on the network.

Instructions

    • 1

Open "Control Panel" from the "Start" menu. Type "network" into the search box in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

    • 2

Click "Network and Sharing Center," then click "Set up a new connection or network."

    • 3

Select "Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer to computer) network" and click "Next." Click "Next" again.

    • 4

Enter a name for the ad hoc network.

    • 5

Select a security type. "WPA2-Personal" is quite secure, and lets you use any password you like.

    • 6

Enter a password into the "Security Key" box and click "Next" to continue. Wait for the computer to finish creating the network, then click "Close."

    • 7

On the other wireless computer, click the wireless reception icon on the Windows taskbar in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.

    • 8

Select the wireless ad-hoc network you created from the list that pops up and enter the password. Your computers will then exchange network information and establish an ad-hoc network.
