How to Fix a Corrupted .Doc File

Fixing a corrupted .doc file can keep you from having to type it over again.

Fixing a corrupted .doc file is necessary when Microsoft Word is unable to open a .doc file because it is corrupted or damaged. Files become corrupted and require recovery as a result of incorrect information saved in the file. This can happen by transmitting a file via the Internet or because of faulty storage media. While Microsoft Word can repair some damaged .doc files, it is not possible to recover all corrupted files, so backup copies of important files remain invaluable.

Instructions

1. Click the "File" menu at the top of the Microsoft Word window.

2. Select "Open" to select the corrupted .doc file.

3. Navigate to and locate the Word file you want to attempt to fix in the Open window.

4. Click on the file name once to select it. Do not double-click the file name, because this will force Word to attempt opening the file.

5. Click the arrow on the Open button and then click "Open and Repair." Microsoft Word will attempt to fix and recover the corrupted .doc file.
