Decorate your vehicle with a spare tire cover.

If you own a vehicle with a prominent spare tire such as a Jeep, you may want to liven up its look and send a message to the world by putting a customized spare tire cover on it. Options for doing this include buying one ready-made from a dealer, designing one yourself and having it made by an artist or designing it and making it yourself. Whichever method you decide to use, be sure to use high quality paints and materials to make it last as long as possible.

Instructions

  1. Draw the Design

    • 1

Sketch some designs based on your ideas. In this brainstorming stage, don't worry about perfection or formality. Just get some ideas down on paper where you can look at them and decide which ones you like best. Draw different versions of the same theme and play with the relative sizes and placements of different elements, keeping in mind the final size and circular shape of the piece.

    • 2

Make a circle on a piece of graph paper using a compass. This circle represents the outside diameter of your spare tire cover. Draw your final design inside this circle, making a point to make it compatible with the circular outline.

    • 3

Add color to your design using colored pencils. Try to match the colors in your design to the colors that you will get from oil paints.

    Paint the Cover

    • 4

Lay the tire cover on a flat surface. If possible, put a circular piece of wood or stiff cardboard inside the cover so you have a solid backing on which to paint.

    • 5

Use the lines of the graph paper on your drawing as a guide to lay out the same design on the tire cover. You may be able to draw light pencil lines on the cover to correspond to the lines on the graph paper. If you want to do this, draw one line on a less visible part and test it to see if you can erase it without leaving a mark.

    • 6

Draw the design on the cover using a pencil or a pen that shows up on the cover.

    • 7

Paint in the design using indelible oil paints. Research the paints to be sure that they are appropriate for use on vinyl and for outdoor use. Begin with large color fields and save the smaller details for last; this way, you won't have to paint around all the small details.

    • 8

Allow the paint to dry thoroughly before moving the cover or putting it onto the spare tire.
