How to Run the CHKDSK Utility

CHKDSK is a Windows operating system tool that analyzes and scans the computer's hard drive, checking its integrity and making sure it is capable of securely storing your personal files and folders. In Windows versions before Windows 7, users have to run CHKDSK via an MS DOS command prompt. Windows 7 allows users to run CHKDSK directly from the "Start" menu by searching for its shortcut icon.

      Click "Start."

      Type "CHKDSK" (without quotation marks) into the "Search" box. An icon for CHKDSK will appear.

      Click the "CHKDSK" icon to run the utility on the computer.
