How do I Service a Suntour Gear Cluster?

The Suntour brand gear cluster is a collection of different size sprockets attached to the freehub of a rear bicycle wheel. Also known as a freewheel, the cluster of sprockets serves as gearing for the rear half of the bicycle. While cogs that are damaged or overly worn may need to be replaced, the cluster as a whole can be serviced occasionally to help maintain performance. Removing the cluster and wiping it free of old grease and grime helps keep the chain clean and the drive train operating smoothly. The cluster is serviced with the rear wheel removed from the bicycle.

    Things You'll Need

    • Suntour compatible freewheel removal tool
    • Rag
    • Rubbing alcohol
    • Waterproof bicycle grease
    1. Gear Cluster Removal

      • 1

Place the wheel upright on the ground or work bench with the Suntour gear cluster facing away from you.

      • 2

Remove the nut from the end of the quick-release skewer. The skewer passes through the center of the axle of the wheel.

      • 3

Attach a Suntour compatible freewheel removal tool to the center of the gear cluster.

      • 4

Thread the quick-release skewer nut back onto the end of the skewer and tighten. The nut will serve to hold the freewheel removal tool in place.

      • 5

Attach an adjustable wrench around the freewheel removal tool.

      • 6

Hold the wheel steady while rotating the wrench counterclockwise. Continue loosening the gear cluster. Remove the quick-release skewer nut and lift the gear cluster free of the side of the wheel.

      Servicing and Installation

      • 1

Set the Suntour gear cluster on the surface before you.

      • 2

Moisten the edge of a rag with rubbing alcohol.

      • 3

Run the moistened edge of the rag between each of the sprockets. Clean the surfaces of the teeth that line the sprockets.

      • 4

Use the rag to clean old grease from inside the Suntour cluster.

      • 5

Apply fresh waterproof bicycle grease to the threads inside the cluster.

      • 6

Fit the Suntour gear cluster back onto the freehub, on the side of the wheel. The freehub will pass through the center of the cluster.

      • 7

Tighten the cluster by hand, turning it clockwise. Once the wheel is installed on the bicycle, pedaling the bicycle will fully tighten the cluster.
