Homemade Fishing Tip-Ups

You can make your own tip-up for fishing

Ice fishing equipment can get rather expensive. When using tip-ups, you always run the risk of your line breaking, thus losing your tip-up. Creating your own homemade fishing tip-ups to can save you money. The supplies needed are inexpensive, allowing you to create many at a time. All you need is a small, lightweight rod 18 to 24 inches long and about 1/4-inch wide, another rod that is the same length but 3/4-inch wide, a bright colored strip of cloth or tape and some twine, heavy fishing line or string.

• Tape
• Rod
• Twine

Instructions

1. Attach the strip of cloth or tape to one end of the lighter rod. This can be tied on by a knot.

2. Place the two rods together to form a cross. Make sure that the end with the cloth or tape is longer than the opposing end. The other end should only extend a couple of inches past the heavier rod.

3. Bind the two rods together with the twine, fishing line or string. This is done at the cross by going back and forth and creating a knot. The bind is tighter with square lashing, but you can use a regular knot if you choose.

4. Tie your actual fishing line to the shorter end of the lighter rod.

5. Place the homemade tip-up onto the ice with the heavier rod holding onto the hole. The lighter rod should lay freely. When a fish bites, the line will be pulled into the water and the flag will swing into the air.
