How to Restring an Alvarez Guitar

How to Restring an Alvarez Guitar thumbnail
Classical guitars are strung differently from steel-string guitars.

Alvarez is an acoustic guitar manufacturer that makes several production-model guitars for every level of guitar player, from beginner to master. No matter how good the guitar, however, the strings are still a vital part of the tone of the instrument, and putting new strings on any guitar will make it sound significantly better. The actual mechanics of restringing an Alvarez guitar depend on whether you're restringing a steel-string acoustic guitar or a nylon-string acoustic guitar.

Things You'll Need

  • New strings
  • String winder with a slot to remove bridge pegs (for steel-string acoustics)

Instructions

  1. Steel-String Guitars

    • 1

Remove the old strings. Turn the tuning knobs one by one until all the strings are loose, and then remove the strings from the tuning posts. Remove the pegs from the bridge with a string winder and then discard the old strings.

    • 2

Insert the end of the new low E string into the string slot in the bridge. Replace the bridge peg, pushing it snugly into its place.

    • 3

Pull the loose end of the string through the correct tuning post (for the low E, the tuner closest to you on the top of the headstock). Pull the string taut and then wrap it around the tuning post once. Check that the string is running through the proper nut slot before you tighten the string.

    • 4

Turn the tuning knob counterclockwise until the string becomes relatively tight.

    • 5

Repeat the restringing process for the other five strings. Tune the strings and then play around with them for awhile. Retune the strings anytime they go out of tune. It takes new strings a little while to settle in.

    Nylon-String Guitars

    • 6

Remove the old strings by turning the tuning knobs one by one until all the strings are loose. Next, remove the strings from the tuning posts. Untie the strings from the bridge. Make note of the way they are attached to the bridge, because the new strings will have to be attached in the same manner.

    • 7

Tie the low E string to the bridge. Most bass-end classical guitar strings have a loose end that is meant to be tied.

    • 8

Pull the loose end of the string through the correct tuning post (for the low E, the tuner closest to you on the top of the headstock). Pull the string taut and then wrap it around the tuning post once. Check that the string is running through the proper nut slot before you tighten the string.

    • 9

Turn the tuning knob counterclockwise until the string becomes relatively tight.

    • 10

Repeat the restringing process for the other five strings. Tie all the strings carefully in order to increase tuning stability. Tune the strings and then play the guitar for awhile. Retune the strings anytime they go out of tune. New strings require some time to settle in.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although the tuning pegs on Alvarez classical guitars are oriented differently from those on the company's steel-string guitars, they work in the exact same manner as the tuners on the steel-string guitars.

  • Use an electronic tuner with a built-in mic for the most accurate tuning results.
