Partitioning a drive divides the drive into different parts or joins the parts of a drive together, if you are creating only one partition for a drive. All Mac computers running on Mac OS X come with the utility program, Disk Utility, which allows users to easily format and partition any drive you can connect to your computer.

Instructions

      Open Disk Utility on your MacBook computer in the Application/Utilities folder. Connect any external drives you wish to partition to your computer now.

      Select the drive you want to partition from the Disk Utility window. Click on the “Partition” tab.

      Click on the “"Volume Scheme:" menu and select “1.”

      Click on “"Volume Information" and select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” for a Mac partition and “MS-DOS” for a Windows partition. Click “Apply.” Your drive will be reformatted to a single partition.

Tips & Warnings

  • Back up any data on the hard drive you want to keep before you partition if as they data will be lost once the partition is complete.
