In Florida you may need to get licensed to do business by the state and by your local government.

Starting a business in Florida can be rewarding and profitable if you choose one for which you have a genuine passion. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Florida has a population of more than 18 million people, with close to nine million housing units. This is a large potential market for any business that emerges in this state. Just as with all states in the U.S., you need to be properly licensed to do business by the local government in the Florida area where your business is located, and in most instances by the state government too.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit City Hall or the governing offices in the Florida city where your business is located. If the area where your business is located is governed by the county, then you will need to contact the county government offices. These offices will have information on how and where to apply for a business license. Use the help of the local phone book to locate the governing offices or visit the official website.

    • 2

Find the department that issues business licenses once you get to the governing offices. Look for an information desk with a receptionist or a representative that can direct you to the business licensing department. If you don't see anyone that can help you, locate a building map or signs that lead to the correct department.

    • 3

Ask for a business license application when you get to the licensing department. Fill out the application thoroughly, answering all the questions that apply to you and your business. Typically you will need to provide your name and contact information, your business name and location, whether it's a sole proprietorship, LLC, LLP or corporation, estimated gross revenue, and other factors.

    • 4

Submit your business license application along with any required licensing fees. The business licensing department will contact you once your license has been approved.

    • 5

Ask a representative in your local government's business licensing department if your business is in an industry that is regulated by the state of Florida. If it is, you will need to get licensed through the state government as well. A representative in your local government licensing department will tell you how and where to get licensed with the state.
