An HP laptop can work with any type of wireless router. HP laptops have a built-in WiFi adapters that let users connect to any open wireless network. Most wireless routers have two types of encryption from which to choose: WEP or WPA. They are similar, but WPA is considered to be more secure than WEP. All Internet users should have some sort of password protection. You can set your own network name and password or even change from WPA to WEP on your HP laptop.

      Open a browser window on your HP laptop. Type in the IP address listed on the bottom of your router. It may look like "http://192.168.1.1." Press "Enter." You will see a login box pop up on the screen.

      Type in your network name and password and press "Enter."

      Click on the "Wireless" tab and then select "Wireless Security."

      Select "WEP" for the encryption type. Type in a new password in the blank box. It should be between eight and 32 characters long with random characters that are difficult for someone to crack. Write down the password in a secure location in case you forget it.

      Click "Save Settings" and close the browser.
